Updates - love them or hate them?

Our lives are now ruled by the requirement to download & install updates. I'm currently stuck between two laptops I'm rebuilding for customers. For the last 90 minutes I have achieved nothing, as both machines are downloading & installing Windows updates.

And this isn't the result of struggling with under-spec'd kit. One of them is a brand-new i7 with 12Gb RAM. We've got 65mbps fibre into the workshop. Low-rent this certainly ain't!

Once this is all done they've got to have Office & AutoCAD installed. Leaving aside the actual installation, they'll need massive updates downloading & installing as well.

It's bad enough here in the workshop (you run out of bench space, power leads & network points - and end up twiddling your thumbs). It's a real embarrassment on-site with a customer. You sort out their issue, but it needs a re-boot. So you do. Only to be met with "Windows is configuring update 1 of 74 - please do not turn off your computer". So you sit like a lemon for the best part of an hour with a frustrated customer, just so you can complete the work-package, which is nearly always only a couple of clicks away.

But it gets worse. My (Android) phone is playing the same game. I was on holiday a while ago, and my phone was, for all intents and purposes, useless. Every time I powered it up some package I'd never heard of started to update, swallowing all the unit's performance, and all of the available bandwidth. In the end I just switched the bloody thing off and stayed in the bar. Which was probably no bad thing...

I appreciate that patching problems is an important process, but 2Gb+ for a new Windows installation? Really?
