Should I go to Windows 10?
Yes, you should. But...
UPDATE:
I have just updated my primary workstation to Windows 10. And, so far, it's all good! There are several good reasons why this is a good idea.
- It has been reasonably well tested. And Microsoft are very aware of the negative effect of their Windows 8 launch, and are keen to "do this right". There's also the well known theory that every alternate release of Windows is 'good', so the omens look positive.
- We have been playing with it here for some time, and quite like it. Certainly anyone used to Windows 7 or 8 will be right at home.
- Windows 7/8/ will be killed off with little ceremony. Microsoft want shot of them ASAP. A free update to Windows 10 seems like a good deal.
- Windows 10 will be the last version of Windows - there will be no Windows 11. All future developments will be increments on Windows 10, so you'll have to take the jump sooner or later. Might as well do it while it's free.
There are, of course, issues to consider:
- There are bound to be teething problems. You might want to leave it a bit. The free offer will last for a year, so there's no rush.
- If you rush in the first weeks the Microsoft servers will be busy with eager beavers.
- You must make sure all the software you need will work with Windows 10. All the 'normal' software (Office and the like) will be fine. If you have odd/bespoke/old software you'll need to make sure it works with Windows 10 before you commit.
- Similarly with hardware. If your PC is OK with Windows 7/8 then Windows 10 should be no problem. Again, it's the old/odd/bespoke bits of kit that will give the problems. So check for Windows 10 compatibility for things like printers and scanners. This sort of info is a high priority for manufacturers, so it should be easy to find.
- The standard browser in Windows 10 is "Edge" - so you need to make sure you can use all your favourite websites with this (although Internet Explorer 11 will be available as an option).
- It will be a BIG download. You have been warned!
Remember:
This is an update and (in my case at least) worked very well. My PC came back with everything as I left it. But please remember, this is a major task, so there is plenty of opportunities for stuff to go wrong. So please make sure ALL of your data/settings etc. need are backed up.
Is there any way to test before I jump?
Yes several. Here are a couple:- We can image your disk before you make the upgrade, so you can go back it it's a disaster.
- We can virtualise your current system & do the upgrade on that, to see how it goes.
- We could loan you a Windows 10 system for you to try.
But, on balance, we'd say do it. Just wait a few weeks...
