Windows 10 - the countdown begins.

Those of you who do your updates regularly will be seeing a little icon pop up in your system tray. It's an invitation from Windows to register for your free Windows 10 upgrade. Don't worry - it's quite genuine (although we're sure someone, somewhere, is planning a scam based on this event).

In general, we think Windows 10 is pretty good. Previews have shown a system that combines the power of Windows 8 (which we quite like - in the 8.1 form) and the more familiar 'look & feel' of Windows 7.

One departure from the old ways that you may not have twigged, is that Microsoft say this will be the 'last ever Windows'. What they mean by this is that there will be no 'Windows 11'. Just like Mac's OSX, all future developments will be incremental on Windows 10. Although sometimes the incremental update feels like a complete re-install!

In general, we'd recommend it. Certainly, if you're a standard user I'd do it. If you're a business user you'll have to test compatibility with ALL of your software before you take the plunge. Especially the new Edge browser (Internet Explorer replacement).

There's no such thing as a free lunch - we await with baited breath the announcement of some little snag that will turn this act of generosity into a revenue opportunity. But, so far, it all looks exactly as described.

Our guess is that there will be no extended death-throws for Windows 7 & 8 - Microsoft will want to kill these off as soon as possible. And, since they're giving the replacement away for free, it would seem churlish to argue.

Just to emphasise some points:
  1. At this stage Microsoft are just inviting you to register.
  2. The download will be BIG.
  3. You must have everything backed-up!
  4. If you have any applications that are critical, check first & have a fall-back plan.
