The simplest ones are the best.

Beware - there's a new scam doing the rounds. And it's all done in a single phone call. It goes like this.

You get a phone call:

"Hello, I'm from BT. I am calling about an unpaid bill".

"I'm up-to-date! I don't know what you're talking about!"

"I'm sorry, but it says here that you owe £xx. If you don't pay this immediately BT will cut you off. Then there will be a £100+VAT re-connection charge as well."

"I don't believe it! I don't even believe you are from BT."

"I can prove it. I can cut you off right now if you want!"

Phone goes dead. You try to dial out. Nothing! You have been cut off! Help! Panic! 30 seconds later the phone goes again.

"Hello, this is BT again. Do you believe me now?"

"Yes alright! Here are my card details."

All he has done is hit the "mute" button on his phone. Even if you hang up, you can't dial out, because his call is still active. Worse, he can hear you panicking trying to make an outgoing call. As soon as you give up he hangs up & immediately redials.

Hopefully I don't have to labour the problems you will face if he has your card details...

Simple & effective. Watch out.
